How Pilates Can Help You To Reduce Back Pain

Back pain is one of the most common problems in our modern lives.

Many studies show that Pilates might help you to reduce back pain and improve function.

Continue to read to learn how Pilates can help you to relieve your back pain.

What can cause Back Pain?

As a Physiotherapist and Pilates Instructor, I can tell you there are many different reasons! However, I will mention here the most common reasons and how pilates can help you.

So, one of the most common reasons is anomalies of the spine such as scoliosis, round back or lordosis.

Moreover, as a result of traumatic injuries in muscles, tendons or ligaments in car accidents, playing football etc might cause pain.

In one of the studies it also showed that in elderly women who is experiencing chronic pain their abdominal muscle strength lower than others.

Moreover, researchers found a relationship between muscle weakness and risk of falling. In other words, if you are complaining about falling pilates is not only going to help you to reduce the pain it also helps you to reduce the risk of falling.

How does Pilates help?

Research shows these common reasons cause muscle imbalance, core weakness and core instability. In addition, it is known that for those who have done core stabilisation and strengthening over a period of 6 weeks show greater reduction in pain compared to usual physical therapy exercise in the same period.

So here pilates comes! Pilates helps you to correct your posture, strength and stabilise your core. It makes you aware of your posture.

However, not all of the pilates exercises are suitable. That is to say that you should modify some of the exercises.

So in my opinion, for those who are experiencing pain I would suggest you to get a one on one lesson or join special back classes.

I hope this information helped you.
